A cheval sur léperon rocheux dominant la confluence de lUbaye et de lUbayette le fort de Tournoux étend ses constructions sur plus de 700m de dénivelé. Son étendue et les prouesses techniques manifestées par sa construction en font lun des sites fortifiés militaires les plus intéressants de France. Il fut construit entre 1843 et 1866, pour un coût supérieur à 2 millions de francs-or. Lensemble sarticule autour de trois ouvrages majeurs (la batterie 12, le fort moyen et le fort supérieur), reliés entre eux par des galeries souterraines ou des rampes extérieures. Chaque ouvrage possède son système dentrées indépendantes et de multiples bâtiments en élévation ou casematés ; chacun des ces édifices représente un type intéressant darchitecture militaire. Dépassé dès sa mise en service par lapparition de lartillerie rayée, le fort est complété en 1874 par la batterie des Caurres, qui le couvre depuis le sommet. Maintenu en état tout au long du XXe siècle, lensemble est acquis en 1991 par la communauté de communes du pays de lUbaye.

History
Straddling a rocky spur overlooking the confluence of the Ubaye and Ubayette, the fort of Tournoux extends its constructions over more than 700m of elevation gain. Its extent and the technical feats demonstrated by its construction make it one of the most interesting military fortified sites in France. It was constructed between 1843 and 1866, at a cost exceeding 2 million gold francs. The whole is articulated around three major works (battery 12, the middle fort and the upper fort), connected to each other by underground galleries or external ramps. Each work has its own system of independent entrances and multiple buildings in elevation or casemented; each of these buildings represents an interesting type of military architecture. Overtaken as soon as it was put into service by the appearance of rifled artillery, the fort is completed in 1874 by the Caurres battery, which covers it from the summit. Maintained in condition throughout the 20th century, the whole is acquired in 1991 by the community of communes of the Ubaye region.
