Historique
Le monument aux morts de la guerre de 1914-1918 de Château-Arnoux fut initié dès 1921 mais il fallut attendre 1928 pour que ce monument soit enfin réalisé grâce au concours du sculpteur Alfred Salvignol. Le choix du sujet révèle une volonté affirmée de délivrer un message de paix. En effet, le monument offre le spectacle d'une mère meurtrie par le chagrin, au pied d'un obélisque, désignant la liste des morts à un jeune homme brisant un glaive sur ses genoux comme pour signifier «plus jamais ça». Un globe terrestre entouré d'un rameau d'olivier décore le sommet de l'obélisque et son socle porte, gravé, une inscription en latin «Pax, Vox Populi», suivie d'un poème d'inspiration pacifiste. A ce titre, cette uvre est considérée comme un des rares monuments aux morts de la Grande Guerre de tonalité ouvertement en faveur du respect des Droits de l'Homme tant par le sujet que par les inscriptions.

History
The war memorial for the 1914-1918 war in Château-Arnoux was initiated as early as 1921 but it was necessary to wait until 1928 for this memorial to finally be realized thanks to the collaboration of sculptor Alfred Salvignol. The choice of subject reveals a clear desire to deliver a message of peace. Indeed, the memorial offers the spectacle of a mother grieved by sorrow, at the foot of an obelisk, pointing out the list of the dead to a young man breaking a sword on his knees as if to signify 'never again'. A terrestrial globe surrounded by an olive branch decorates the top of the obelisk and its base bears, engraved, an inscription in Latin 'Pax, Vox Populi', followed by a poem of pacifist inspiration. As such, this work is considered one of the rare First World War memorials of openly pacifist character both in subject matter and in inscriptions.
