Historique

History
Comital castle dated to the 12th-13th centuries. It served as residence for the Counts of Forcalquier, notably Raymond-Béranger V, last Count of Provence, died in 1245. Castle delimited by two ditches; stretches of walls still visible along a ditch; octagonal keep tower, built in medium-size limestone ashlar (ensemble preserved to a height of 7.50 metres). At the southern extremity of the rocky ridge, stands the castle chapel Sainte-Agathe: it is a small rectangular building vaulted with a broken barrel vault, with a flat chevet oriented to the east and covered with stone slates. In 1745 (date engraved), piercing of a round-arched doorway to the south (until then, the entrance was through the west façade). The choir is decorated with 14th-century wall paintings representing a series of apostles standing under trilobed arcades occupying the three walls.
