La commune d'Ars-sur-Formans, à l'histoire assez obscure au Moyen Age et de peu d'intérêt à la Période moderne, se distingue désormais grâce à Jean-Marie Vianney qui fut l'abbé d'Ars. Ce pieux curé, qui devint celui d'Ars en 1817, se distingua sa vie durant pour son altruisme, sa générosité et son ascétisme sans concession pour lui-même. Il œuvra pour les pauvres de sa paroisse et, d'ailleurs, développa l'éducation des jeunes filles et orphelins des environs et n'eut de cesse d'organiser pèlerinages et œuvre charitables. De son vivant, il suscita l'intérêt de ses contemporains qui venaient depuis Lyon écouter le bon curé. Après sa mort le 4 août 1859, des pèlerinages furent organisés. History
The commune of Ars-sur-Formans, of rather obscure history in the Middle Ages and of little interest in the Early Modern period, now distinguishes itself thanks to Jean-Marie Vianney who was the curé of Ars. This pious priest, who became curé of Ars in 1817, distinguished himself throughout his life for his altruism, his generosity and his uncompromising asceticism for himself. He worked for the poor of his parish and, moreover, developed the education of young girls and orphans from the surrounding area and ceaselessly organised pilgrimages and charitable works. During his lifetime, he aroused the interest of his contemporaries who came from Lyon to listen to the good curé. After his death on 4 August 1859, pilgrimages were organised.
