Between 1522 and 1541, François I had the stronghold of Ardres reinforced by six bastions built against the medieval enclosure. The works were entrusted to Italian architect Dominique de Cortone, known as Boccador. Razed after 1849, only the bastion Condette remains of these fortifications, whose preservation is due to the development of a public garden. It is a bastion whose salient forms an angle with a front length of 70 metres and a flank length of 30 metres, comprising three high galleries vaulted in brick, serving the staircases giving access to the lower defences. The countermine gallery runs around the main orillons, serving four firing positions, each pierced with three divergent loopholes for musket fire allowing multidirectional fire. Above, ventilation rises to the surface of the bastion to allow the evacuation of firing smoke. Presence in the flanks of a casemate for heavy artillery, with two French-style embrasures, covered with a brick vault resting on a central pillar with three vents. This bastion is an example of a transitional work between fortification by artillery towers and fortification by bastions.
