Historique

History
The commune of Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts is at the centre of a network of lagoons comprising the lagoon of Berre, the lagoons of Citis and du Po. The village does not appear to date back beyond the 12th century. At the beginning of the 15th century, around 1405, the archbishop of Arles gives permission to surround the town with ramparts. The town develops continuously from that time onwards, raising houses still largely preserved. A particular phase of growth is observed at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. In the 19th century, part of the ramparts are demolished to open gates during the cholera epidemic of 1840. The ensemble of ramparts is still very homogeneous.
