Historique

History
The lordship of Cluzeau fell under the castellany of Montmorillon and appears in texts from the early 14th century. Occupation of the site dates back at least to the Romanesque period. Until the early 20th century, a strong square keep with round buttresses was visible in the courtyard, now completely razed. The northern and western part of the keep's enclosure now serves as a plinth for a main dwelling built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Two large cylindrical defensive towers flank the outer walls. On the courtyard side, another cylindrical tower contains a spiral staircase, accessible by a richly decorated door. Practically all the openings are original and have retained their moulded tracery. Some medieval fireplaces are visible, including a monumental one. A spiral staircase provides access to a maze of underground passages carved out of the rock. This castle is a typical example of the remodelling of an old building at the end of the Middle Ages.
