History

This mine shaft, sunk by the Société des Mines d'Albi in 1892 to a depth of 202 m, was put into service in 1896, stopped in 1905, as was shaft no. 1, upon the commissioning of shaft no. 3. It subsequently served only as a ventilation shaft, but from 1979 to 1985, also as a rescue shaft. The whole comprises shaft no. 2 with its lattice girder headframe of original design, and the machine room building which houses a Fournier Mouillon extraction machine, the chimney, testimony to the steam age, and a Rateau aspirating fan associated with the square brick exhaust chimney. Beside it remain buildings from shaft no. 1, also with an aspirating fan and its chimney, the weighbridge building and the water reservoir. Inaugurated in 1992, the Mine-Museum possesses, in addition to an exhibition space in a new building, a mine gallery created by former miners evoking the evolution of coal extraction techniques. This museum, currently being refurbished, is integrated into the major conversion project of the former open-cast mine "Cap'Découverte", Europe's first multi-leisure centre where the museum will be the focal point of the "memory hub" dedicated to the genesis of fossil coal and the exploitation of mines in the Carmausin region.
