Après la perte du Milanais (1523) , le roi François Ier donne l'ordre de remettre en état toutes les places fortes qui ceinturaient le pays. Entre la porte Saint-Michel et le bastion du Moulin du Château, une ligne de défense en terre crue avait été bâtie au 14e siècle à la place de l'ancienne enceinte romaine. On décide de construire la barbacane et 92 mètres de rempart en briques cuites. La portion subsistante s'élève sur une hauteur de dix mètres environ ; quatre canonnières en pierre sont encore bien visibles.

History
After the loss of the Milanese (1523), King François I orders that all the strongholds which encircled the country be restored. Between the Saint-Michel gate and the Moulin du Château bastion, a line of defence in raw earth had been built in the 14th century in place of the former Roman enclosure. It is decided to construct the barbican and 92 metres of rampart in fired bricks. The remaining portion rises to a height of approximately ten metres; four stone gun-loops are still clearly visible.
