Historique
L'ancienne prison de Guingamp, une des premières prisons cellulaires des Côtes-d'Armor, a été construite de 1834 à 1840, juste après le rapport de Tocqueville sur les prisons américaines, selon le modèle pennsylvanien, avec des cellules disposées autour d'une cour centrale entourée de galeries soutenues par des colonnes. History
The former Guingamp prison, one of the first cellular prisons in Côtes-d'Armor, was built from 1834 to 1840, shortly after Tocqueville's report on American prisons, according to the Pennsylvanian model, with cells arranged around a central court surrounded by galleries supported by columns. A pioneering humanist prison, it is a major element in the history of prison architecture. It has 35 cells, most of them 4 m by 1.75 m. There are also warders' lodgings, service buildings and several small courts. Brought into service in 1841, it served until 1934 (when it was transferred to Saint-Brieuc). Officially closed in 1951, it became the property of the commune in 1992.
