Historique

History
Built in 1814, its function was to obtain a stable state of silk humidity to fix the merchant weight, desiccation being obtained in large halls under calorimetric and hygrometric control. At the foot of the slopes of the Croix-Rousse, the edifice was erected on the plans of architect Joseph-Jean Gay (1775-1832), the direction of works being assured by architect Jean-Joseph Pilliet. Originally isolated from neighbouring buildings for safety, the building has an official appearance, rectangular, rising to the third storey. The street façade imitates the ternary rhythm of Italian palaces. Its ground floor is simply ashlar-faced, with a harped angle chain; the entrance door offers a round arch richly sculptured with motifs of mulberry leaves, silkworms and lions. To the right, a bas-relief of Pasteur in bronze was added to the façade in 1924. The first floor presents an arcature of round-arched openings resting on pillars. Above the windows of the second floor, separated by openings, the crowning of the façade consists of an attic topped with a roof with eaves with decorated joists. The inner courtyard is articulated by arcade openings. A monumental staircase, with three flights and central void, serves the storeys. Enlarged and modernized in 1884 by architect Pascalon, the Condition suffered the decline of silk industries competed against in the early 20th century by the progress of chemistry. It would shelter in the 1950s the Research Centre for Silk and Textile Industries, but was completely disused in 1976. The building was rehabilitated by the Lyon architectural firm Mortamet-Vidal-Manhés in 1982, and was transformed into a social and cultural centre (media library).
