The church is mentioned as early as the 11th century in the chartulary of Savigny, so a construction between the 11th and 12th century can be assumed. From the 12th century, the church is part of the enclosure of the Château de Chalain-d'Uzore belonging to the Couzan family. Marks of elevation suggest that in the 14th century the church was fortified in order to create circulation spaces for men-at-arms. Round-arch openings in the nave certainly correspond to a phase of work in the 15th century. In 1533, Gabriel de Lévis-Couzan, lord of Chalin d'Uzore, chose the church as his place of burial. His effigy and that of his wife Anne de Joyeuse are today under the porch of the castle, their original location is not known, these were found in 1910 in the paving of the church. The church underwent several series of works between the 19th and 20th centuries, notably on the upper parts. Sheets of notes from the Brassart collection mention "traces of ancient paintings in the great apse" as well as the presence of decoration in the north apsidiole and a 14th-century consecration cross painted on the south pier.
