History
The Aqueduc du Gier was built in reticulated masonry in the 2nd century AD and is one of four aqueducts that made it possible to bring water to the Fourvière hill. Among the four aqueducts it is the longest, spanning 86 km between the Loire and the Rhône, crossing 21 communes. The Aqueduc was discovered beneath the former dye works of Izieux where it served as an industrial conduit. The aqueduct comprises over 40 bridges, 92 arches of which 70 are still visible today.
