Historique
Entièrement reconstruite au milieu du 19e siècle, la fonderie de Saint-Gervais est connue pour avoir fondu les premiers canons de fer en France, en 1678. Rachetée par le roi en 1731, Saint-Gervais était à cette date, la troisième fonderie de canons de la marine, après Ruelle et Indret. Le caractère exceptionnel de cette établissement réside dans le fait qu'il est resté inchangé depuis sa restauration en 1843. La naissance du canon rayé entraîna la fermeture de l'établissement en 1873. Inscrite dans un rectangle, la fonderie proprement dite construite en pierre de taille de Rovon, ornée de deux avants-corps très simples, conserve quatre fours visibles. Un étang artificiel rempli par un long canal d'amenée permettait d'alimenter quatre roues hydrauliques disparues. Seuls subsistent la roue à aube, les bâtiments de service et la conciergerie qui ont conservé les symétries de l'ordonnancement général, et le bâtiment principal et sa charpente en bois, d'une portée exceptionnelle.

History
Entirely rebuilt in the mid-19th century, the Saint-Gervais foundry is known for having cast the first iron cannons in France, in 1678. Bought back by the king in 1731, Saint-Gervais was at that date the third marine cannon foundry, after Ruelle and Indret. The exceptional character of this establishment lies in the fact that it has remained unchanged since its restoration in 1843. The birth of the rifled cannon led to the closure of the establishment in 1873. Enclosed in a rectangle, the foundry proper, built of Rovon ashlar, decorated with two very simple avant-corps, preserves four visible furnaces. An artificial pond filled by a long supply channel allowed four now-disappeared water wheels to be fed. Only the water wheel remain, along with the service buildings and the lodge which have retained the symmetries of the overall arrangement, and the main building and its timber roof structure, of exceptional span.
