L’église de Mayres-Savel existe depuis au moins le XIe siècle, où elle est citée sous le nom d’église de Mayres (Ecclesia de Maires) et associée à une paroisse de Mayres depuis au moins le XIIe siècle (Parrochia de Maires en 1188). Consacrée à saint Jean-Baptiste depuis le Moyen-âge, elle a vraisemblablement été construite, dans sa forme générale actuelle, au XIIe siècle. Au XIXe siècle, l’église fait l’objet de travaux : un certain nombre de baies sont agrandies ou leur embrasure remodelée (baies de la nef, de l’abside du chœur, du transept au sud et à l’est). Une tribune de style néo-gothique est construite à l’entrée après la façade, incluant une baie et un vitrail représentant saint Jean-Baptiste.
Description
L’église est bâtie en forme de croix latine, avec un transept bas. Trois absidioles en hémicycle sont greffées sur le chevet et le côté est du transept, tandis qu’un haut clocher surplombe le chœur ; il comporte deux étages percés de baies géminées et trigéminées sur les quatre côtés. Les deux étages d’ouvertures sont séparés par des bandeaux plats.

History
The church of Mayres-Savel has existed since at least the 11th century, when it is mentioned under the name of the church of Mayres (Ecclesia de Maires) and associated with a parish of Mayres since at least the 12th century (Parrochia de Maires in 1188). Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist since the Middle Ages, it was presumably built, in its present general form, in the 12th century. In the 19th century, the church was subject to work: a certain number of openings were enlarged or their embrasure remodelled (openings of the nave, of the choir apse, of the transept to the south and to the east). A neo-gothic gallery is constructed at the entrance after the façade, including an opening and stained glass representing Saint John the Baptist.
Description
The church is built in the form of a Latin cross, with a low transept. Three semicircular absidioles are grafted onto the chevet and the east side of the transept, while a high bell tower rises above the choir; it comprises two storeys pierced with geminate and trigeminate openings on the four sides. The two storeys of openings are separated by flat bandeaux.
