Historique
La congrégation des chanoines réguliers de Saint-Ruf d'Avignon, fondée au 11e siècle, s'est implantée au 12e siècle hors les murs de Valence, puis dans la ville haute à la fin du 16e siècle. Après les transformations du 19e siècle et les destructions de 1944, l'ancienne abbaye de Saint-Ruf "le Haut" conserve comme élément majeur l'église, devenue temple protestant depuis 1806, et dont le décor du choeur a été récemment restauré. De l'ancien hôtel abbatial, devenue préfecture en 1808, il ne subsiste que l'ancien portail, désormais isolé, et deux immeubles, dont l'un a conservé sa façade sur la rue Sabaterie et un monumental escalier du 18e siècle de très grande qualité, dont le décor sculpté est tout à fait homogène avec celui du portail et du temple.

History
The congregation of the Canons Regular of Saint-Ruf of Avignon, founded in the 11th century, established itself in the 12th century outside the walls of Valence, then in the upper town at the end of the 16th century. After the transformations of the 19th century and the destruction of 1944, the former abbey of Saint-Ruf "le Haut" retains as its major element the church, which became a Protestant temple from 1806, and whose choir decoration was recently restored. Of the old abbatial hotel, which became a prefecture in 1808, there remains only the old portal, now isolated, and two buildings, one of which has kept its façade on the rue Sabaterie and a monumental 18th-century staircase of very great quality, whose sculpted decoration is entirely consistent with that of the portal and the temple.
