Gallic oppidum of the barred spur type, dominating the Ardèche. On the accessible face, it is defended by a monumental wall presenting three construction phases. The first is represented by a straight dry stone wall, pierced by a cart gate which delimits an oppidum of four hectares, dated to 130 BC. Then, the enlargement of the oppidum results in a massive structure rhythmed by square towers engaged in the work. An external clavicula, generally found in Roman camps and serving as advanced defence of the gate, and the use of mortar to bind the core are observed in this second phase going back approximately to 80 BC. Finally, a third phase, around 50 BC, doubles this construction with projecting towers, alternately round and square. This final state uses mortar more widely for the facing and the towers. Behind these fortifications is perceptible a settlement composed of houses of different sizes interspersed by a network of roads. This site is without doubt the former chief town of the Helvii, before the creation of Alba Helviorum.
