Historique
Seul château royal de la Renaissance conservé en Picardie, ayant gardé la quasi-intégrité de son plan et de ses volumes extérieurs. Construit vers 1530-1535 par Philibert Delorme pour servir de résidence de chasse à François Ier, le château est achevé en 1556 (pavillon de l'auditoire). Logis et offices très remaniés vers 1750-1770 (surtout les dispositions intérieures). Transformé en dépôt de mendicité en 1808, puis en maison de retraite en 1889, le château conserve néanmoins de nombreux et intéressants vestiges de son décor Renaissance sculpté par Jean Goujon (entre autres les deux escaliers de l'aile ouest des offices).

History
Only royal Renaissance castle preserved in Picardy, having retained the near-complete integrity of its plan and external volumes. Built around 1530-1535 by Philibert Delorme to serve as a hunting residence for François Ier, the castle was completed in 1556 (audience pavilion). Main dwelling and offices much altered around 1750-1770 (especially the interior arrangements). Transformed into a pauper's depot in 1808, then into a retirement home in 1889, the castle nonetheless preserves numerous and interesting remains of its Renaissance decoration sculpted by Jean Goujon (among others the two staircases of the west wing of the offices).
