Historique

History
The castle is one of the most famous in the Beauvaisis. It is a fine construction of bricks and stones with voluminous mascaron heads, with balconies in figured wrought iron. Furnished at the base with conical bollards, connected by chains, it is in pure Mansart style, model of the type of this great architect, builder of Versailles. Two feudal towers remain from the old castle, one from the 14th century, the other rebuilt on the model of that of the castle of Langeais. The southern façade of the castle, entirely in the sun, looks out on the fine lawns of the park, beyond which passes the Thérain carrying the boat said Caesar in his commentaries. This seigneury goes back to the most remote times of feudalism, says a work by Récoffort, as testified by acts from the 9th century. It possessed several fiefs and was important enough to be mentioned in the transactions by which the County of Clermont passed before being united to the crown in 1258. Despite these fluctuations the seigneury of Bailleul, as its regularly established succession proves, only passes by alliance or by inheritance to five families. The first act that one finds is that by which Pierre de Bailleul, in the year 1134, authorizes the religious of Ourscamps to establish themselves on the lands and to found with his help and his money an abbey of which the remains are still to be seen. In 1724, François Michel du Mesnil marries Thérèse de Gaudechart, rebuilds the present castle, dies without children and leaves it to his wife by wills with all his goods in 1778.
