Historique
Situé entre Loire et Allier, le château du Bessay est à l'origine une maison forte édifiée au 14e siècle, sur un plan en fer à cheval. Cantonné de tours circulaires sommées de toits en poivrière, il était ceinturé de douves en eau alimentées par un étang voisin. Ruiné pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, il a été reconstruit par un chambellan du duc de Bourbon, au 15e siècle. Au 18e siècle, le propriétaire, receveur général des finances du Poitou, adapta cette demeure encore féodale au goût du jour : percement de baies, suppression du pont-levis, construction d'une terrasse en demi-lune à l'ouest et transformation de l'aile droite. A cette époque furent créés un parc et un jardin, avec des allées plantées et des bassins et allées d'eau.

History
Situated between Loire and Allier, the château du Bessay is originally a strong house built in the 14th century, on a horseshoe plan. Flanked by circular towers topped with pepperpot roofs, it was surrounded by water-filled moats fed by a neighbouring pond. Ruined during the Hundred Years' War, it was rebuilt by a chamberlain of the Duke of Bourbon, in the 15th century. In the 18th century, the owner, receiver general of finances of Poitou, adapted this still feudal dwelling to the taste of the day: openings pierced, suppression of the drawbridge, construction of a semicircular terrace to the west and transformation of the right wing. At that epoch were created a park and a garden, with planted avenues and pools and water features.
