En juillet 1744, les administrateurs de l'hôpital Saint-Jacques , situé dans le faubourg des Bordes, se portent acquéreurs de l'hôtel du 16ème siècle, dit hôtel du Gouverneur, afin d'y installer un nouvel hôpital. Rapidement, l'étroitesse du lieu rend indispensable la construction, de 1744 à 1749, d'un corps de bâtiment à la droite de l'hôpital, abritant deux salles de malades de part et d'autre d'une chapelle, consacrée en 1749. La salle Sainte-Marthe est dévolue aux femmes tandis que la salle Saint-Louis est occupée par les hommes. En 1745, les administrateurs achètent une porte à deux vantaux , en fer forgé, pour l'entrée de la cour principale. La salle des hommes est agrandie en 1827 et, en 1843-44, une nouvelle aile est édifiée à gauche de la cour, nommée aussi aile Arnault. L'ensemble offre alors un plan en U entourant une cour, ouvert par un portail d'entrée situé au nord-est. Au cours du 20ème siècle, d'autres travaux sont entrepris dont la construction du bloc médico-chirurgical en 1964. En 1974, les salles de l'hôtel du Gouverneur font l'objet d'une réfection ainsi que la charpente. L'hôpital se transforme en maison de retraite, en 1976, à la suite du transfert de tous les services sur un autre site. La fermeture de l'hôpital est définitivement entérinée début juin 2009.

History
In July 1744, the administrators of the hospital of Saint-Jacques, situated in the faubourg des Bordes, become purchasers of the 16th-century hotel, called the Hôtel du Gouverneur, in order to install a new hospital there. Quickly, the narrowness of the place makes indispensable the construction, from 1744 to 1749, of a building block to the right of the hospital, housing two wards on either side of a chapel, consecrated in 1749. The Sainte-Marthe ward is devoted to women while the Saint-Louis ward is occupied by men. In 1745, the administrators buy a two-leafed door, in wrought iron, for the entrance of the main courtyard. The men's ward is enlarged in 1827 and, in 1843-44, a new wing is built to the left of the courtyard, also named the Arnault wing. The complex then offers a U-shaped plan surrounding a courtyard, open by an entrance portal situated to the north-east. In the course of the 20th century, further works are undertaken including the construction of the medico-surgical block in 1964. In 1974, the wards of the Hôtel du Gouverneur are subjected to renovation as well as the roof structure. The hospital is transformed into a retirement home in 1976, following the transfer of all services to another site. The closure of the hospital is definitively confirmed in early June 2009.
