Historique

History
Situated on a strategic position since the beginning of the 11th century, reorganised as a defensive site at the end of the 12th century, the castle of Laval remained essentially military until the Hundred Years' War. Residential developments followed, with a first phase around 1460 then, in continuation, the Gallery of the new castle from 1542. This Renaissance gallery overlooking the Mayenne is built in tuffeau stone. After the Revolution, this gallery was transformed into a courthouse. Two pavilions were added between 1851 and 1857, as well as a return wing on the south side. The work was entrusted to the architect Pierre-Aimé Renoulx. The six bays of the new building are modelled, in their decoration, on the bays of the gallery of the middle of the 16th century.
