Historique
Théâtre construit en 1787-1788 par Mathurin Crucy, élève de Boullée, dans un style néo-classique inspiré de Palladio. En 1796, un incendie détruit la salle et les coulisses. Reconstruction à l'identique (hormis le péristyle, le vestibule et les murs latéraux subsistants) en 1811-1813. La salle est remaniée à plusieurs reprises, en 1829-1830, puis en 1844-1845. Quelques extensions et transformations après 1835, en 1865-1880, enfin entre 1913 et 1930. Réfection de la salle en 1967-1968. La façade principale possède un péristyle de huit colonnes corinthiennes surmontées de huit statues représentant les Muses (la neuvième est installée à la Bourse...).

History
Theatre built in 1787-1788 by Mathurin Crucy, pupil of Boullée, in a neo-classical style inspired by Palladio. In 1796, a fire destroys the auditorium and the wings. Reconstruction identical (except for the peristyle, the vestibule and the surviving side walls) in 1811-1813. The auditorium is remodelled on several occasions, in 1829-1830, then in 1844-1845. Some extensions and transformations after 1835, in 1865-1880, finally between 1913 and 1930. Refurbishment of the auditorium in 1967-1968. The main façade has a peristyle of eight Corinthian columns surmounted by eight statues representing the Muses (the ninth is installed at the Stock Exchange...).
