La citadelle fut construite sur les plans de Vauban, de 1667 à 1671. La création de l'Esplanade ou champ de manpeuvre fut suggérée par Vauban dès 1672 et est consubstantielle à l'existence de la citadelle dont elle représente un élément constitutif. Il s'agit d'un espace dégagé assurant la protection de la forteresse du côté de la ville. Les ouvrages du Grand Carré et le mur de communication d'En-Bas constituent le prolongement des ouvrages de défense de la citadelle et forment la jonction avec les fortifications urbaines.

History
The citadel was built on Vauban's plans, from 1667 to 1671. The creation of the Esplanade or training ground was suggested by Vauban as early as 1672 and is consubstantial with the existence of the citadel of which it represents a constitutive element. It is an open space ensuring the protection of the fortress from the town side. The works of the Grand Carré and the communication wall of En-Bas constitute the extension of the defence works of the citadel and form the junction with the urban fortifications.
