Historique
Le gisement sur lequel se trouve la fosse du Sarteau fut le premier exploité dans le bassin minier du Nord - Pas-de-Calais en 1720. Le chevalement du puits nord en maçonnerie de brique, en forme de tour carrée ressemblant à un donjon médiéval, a été édifié entre 1823 et 1855. Le puits a été fermé en 1860. Le chevalement fut transformé au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, aménagé en blockhaus entièrement bétonné en 1938 et accompagné d'une casemate construite au nord. C'est un des seuls témoins en France des techniques d'exploitation du charbon au milieu du 19e siècle.

History
The deposit on which the Sarteau pit is situated was the first exploited in the mining basin of Nord - Pas-de-Calais in 1720. The headframe of the northern shaft in brick masonry, in the form of a square tower resembling a medieval keep, was erected between 1823 and 1855. The shaft was closed in 1860. The headframe was transformed during the First World War, converted into a blockhouse entirely concreted in 1938 and accompanied by a casemate built to the north. It is one of the only witnesses in France of coal mining techniques in the mid-19th century.
