Historique
Le cirque municipal, improprement appelé hippodrome, a été construit en 1904 par Jules Dropy, directeur du service des travaux municipaux à Douai. L'édifice, un dodécagone de 35 mètres de diamètre, est conçu autour d'une charpente métallique réalisée pour le panorama de Rome qui devait être construit à Paris à l'occasion de l'Exposition universelle de 1900. Le cirque a été remis en état en 1925 à la suite d'un incendie, avec une nouvelle façade en pierre de Savonnières, donnant sur la place. Les écuries subsistent à l'intérieur du bâtiment, réhabilité depuis 1980 pour abriter un centre d'animation culturelle.

History
The municipal circus, improperly called a hippodrome, was built in 1904 by Jules Dropy, director of the municipal works service in Douai. The building, a dodecagon of 35 metres in diameter, is designed around a metal roof structure made for the Panorama of Rome which was to be built in Paris for the Universal Exposition of 1900. The circus was restored in 1925 following a fire, with a new façade in Savonnières stone, facing the square. The stables remain inside the building, rehabilitated since 1980 to house a cultural activities centre.
