Terrains de zone rouge d'une superficie de 39 ha sur lesquels s'élève la colline de Vauquois, tombée en possession des Allemands le 3 septembre 1914 qui s'emploient à la fortifier malgré des assauts répétés. Les Français obtiennent la moitié du plateau le 1er mars 1915. Jusqu'en septembre 1918 s'y succèdent guerre de mines, bombardements et coups de mains. Le site est raviné par les tirs de mines ; 22 km de galeries souterraines subsistent au coeur de la butte.

History

Red zone lands covering an area of 39 hectares on which rises the hill of Vauquois, taken into possession by the Germans on 3 September 1914 who set about fortifying it despite repeated assaults. The French obtained half of the plateau on 1 March 1915. Until September 1918 there followed mine warfare, bombardments and raids. The site is ravined by mine fire; 22 km of underground galleries remain in the heart of the hillock.
