Historique
Le prieuré a été fondé au début du 12e siècle par Audebert de la Trimouille qui fit don à deux ermites, Geoffray Gastinelli et Bertrand, de la moitié du lieu, ou mas de Villesalem. Il fut cédé un peu plus tard aux religieuses de Fontevrault. Le prieuré demeure conventuel jusqu'en 1405 et fut gouverné par un prieur perpétuel jusqu'en 1612. A partir de cette époque et par suite de l'introduction de la réforme de l'abbaye de Fontevrault, les prieurs devinrent triennals. L'église fut probablement commencée vers 1150 en commençant par l'abside sud, mais reste inachevée dans les parties hautes. La voûte de la croisée et du transept date du 13e siècle. L'absidiole sud fut construite d'abord pour servir de chapelle au prieuré. Le décor est très riche.

History
The priory was founded in the early 12th century by Audebert de la Trimouille who made a gift to two hermits, Geoffray Gastinelli and Bertrand, of half the place, or mas de Villesalem. It was ceded somewhat later to the religious women of Fontevrault. The priory remained conventual until 1405 and was governed by a perpetual prior until 1612. From this time onwards and as a result of the introduction of the reform of the abbey of Fontevrault, the priors became triennial. The church was probably begun around 1150 beginning with the south apse, but remains unfinished in the upper parts. The vault of the crossing and transept dates from the 13th century. The south apsidole was built first to serve as a chapel to the priory. The decoration is very rich.
