D'après la tradition, les chevaliers du Temple auraient eu à Chauvigny deux résidences : une dans la ville haute, dite le Manoir des Puits ; l'autre dans la ville basse, qui a conservé son appelation de "Temple". A la suppression de l'ordre, les biens furent réunis à ceux des Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. L'ensemble de l'extérieur du bâtiment a été modifié. La partie inférieure semble avoir été enterrée sur un mètre et a été percée d'ouvertures modernes. La partie gauche de la façade possédait sans doute un grand fenestrage dont il ne subsiste que le départ de l'archivolte reposant sur un culot orné d'une tête. Dans la grande pièce du rez-de-chaussée a été retrouvée, sous un badigeon, une peinture qui fut détruite par la suite. Des caves voûtées avec arceaux en pierres d'appareil, existent au-dessous du bâtiment. Au sud du manoir, à l'emplacement de constructions modernes, s'élevaient les portes qui menaient aux dépendances, placées en arrière.

History
According to tradition, the knights of the Temple would have had two residences at Chauvigny: one in the upper town, called the Manoir des Puits; the other in the lower town, which has preserved its designation of "Temple". Upon the suppression of the order, the goods were united with those of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. The whole of the exterior of the building was modified. The lower part appears to have been buried to a depth of one metre and was pierced with modern openings. The left part of the façade doubtless possessed a large fenestration of which there remains only the springing of the archivolt resting on a corbel adorned with a head. In the large room on the ground floor was found, beneath a wash of paint, a painting which was subsequently destroyed. Vaulted cellars with arches of ashlar stone exist beneath the building. To the south of the manor, at the location of modern constructions, stood the gates which led to the outbuildings, placed to the rear.
