History
The apse and façade may be considered as types of the sculptural decoration which was widely applied in the Aquitanian school in the 12th century and which, in no building, expresses as clearly as at Rioux the decorative scheme of the arcatures forming the crown above the windows and over the entire development of the apse. The base itself participates in this decoration through the combinations of scallops or chevrons which the joints of the masonry display. The same decorative scheme is reproduced on the façade whose arrangement of arcatures was combined to reserve in the centre a wider arcade sheltering, within a nimbus, a statue of the Virgin holding the Child.
