Historique

History
Following an English descent in 1757 which devastated the military works on the Île d'Aix, engineer Filley developed a project for the construction on the Boyard Bank of a fort presenting the characteristics of his so-called "mesalectre" system. All fire-plans are perpendicular to the parapet of the work. This project, slightly modified subsequently with improvements by engineer Garavaque on the protection of circular coast batteries by vaulted casemates, was taken up and adopted in 1801. In 1840, the fort was still unfinished. This monument is an almost unique witness to the systems developed in the 18th century, when military engineers were moving away from Vauban's principles and seeking a new method of protecting harbours and coastlines.
