Le château fut construit par le comte d'Angoulême, Guillaume II Taillefer, qui mourut en 1018 et qui, pour cette construction, employa les matériaux provenant de la démolition du château d'Andone qu'il avait ruiné. Au 12e siècle, Vulgrin II Taillefer construisit remparts et donjon. Pendant la guerre de Cent ans, le territoire et la châtellenie furent ravagés à plusieurs reprises. Le donjon, construit avant 1140, est une tour rectangulaire renforcée de contreforts. Cette tour a été tronquée. A l'ouest a été adossé, plus tard, une tour polygonale tronquée. History
The castle was built by the Count of Angoulême, Guillaume II Taillefer, who died in 1018 and who, for this construction, used materials from the demolition of the castle of Andone which he had ruined. In the 12th century, Vulgrin II Taillefer built the ramparts and keep. During the Hundred Years' War, the territory and castellany were ravaged several times. The keep, built before 1140, is a rectangular tower reinforced with buttresses. This tower has been truncated. To the west was later attached a truncated polygonal tower. A door lintel with a 15th-century ogee indicates the transformations executed later. There is no trace of ditches near the tower. The enclosure, of irregular form, is razed to the level of the ground which bears the keep. To the south, it presents an entrance gate flanked by two truncated cylindrical towers. Built before the use of drawbridges, this gate has the appearance of the 13th century. Remains of cylindrical towers and rampart to the west of this gate.
