Le domaine de la Mercerie, avec son château néo-gothique datant de la fin du 19e siècle, est acquis en 1924 par les frères Réthoré, Raymond (1901-1986) et Alphonse (1905-1983). History
The domain of Mercerie, with its neo-gothic castle dating from the late 19th century, was acquired in 1924 by the brothers Réthoré, Raymond (1901-1986) and Alphonse (1905-1983). The former, a manufacturer of washing machines and later a deputy, is also a collector. With his brother, a self-taught architect, he planned to transform the castle into a Charentais "Versailles", a pastiche of classical architecture undertaken from 1939 onwards and pursued between 1947 and 1975. The ensemble, revealing the megalomaniac ambition of the two brothers, was not completed at Alphonse's death. A large auction sale of furniture and works of art took place in June 1987.
