Historique
La rue doit son nom à l'hôtel qui élevait ses tourelles au-dessus des plus hautes maisons du quartier. Le fief du Plessis se trouve sur la commune de Saint-Sulpice, près de Cognac. Durant les guerres du Moyen Age, ses possesseurs songèrent à mettre leurs personnes et leur fortune à l'abri en construisant leur hôtel dans l'enceinte fortifiée de Cognac. La construction du bâtiment à pignon doit remonter au début du 15e siècle. Il en reste un pignon et une tour hexagonale flanquée d'une échauguette en encorbellement. La façade rue Saint-Martin a sans doute été construite au 17e siècle puis remaniée au 19e. Intérieurement, aucun vestige d'origine ne subsiste.

History
The street owes its name to the hotel which raised its turrets above the highest houses of the quarter. The fief of Plessis is located on the commune of Saint-Sulpice, near Cognac. During the wars of the Middle Ages, its possessors thought to put themselves and their fortune in safety by building their hotel within the fortified enclosure of Cognac. The construction of the building with a gable must date back to the beginning of the 15th century. There remains a gable and a hexagonal tower flanked by a corner turret in corbelling. The façade on rue Saint-Martin was doubtless built in the 17th century then altered in the 19th. Internally, no original vestige remains.
