The site has been inhabited since ancient times. All around the current building are old foundations emerging from the ground. After the Hundred Years' War, the castle was rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century. It was the seat of a seigneury with full justice dependent on Barbezieux. In the 18th century, it became the property of the Marquis de Donissan de Citran, grand seneschal of Guyenne. A main dwelling flanked at the angles of the west side by two round towers. A small tower of stone, of polygonal plan, contains the stone spiral staircase which serves this part of the castle which is lit by windows with mouldings and ogival arches of the 15th century. The interior comprises large rooms with heavy beamed ceilings. The room on the first floor has two 15th-century stone fireplaces, decorated with columns. Beneath this part of the castle exist deep cellars. A simple section of wall connects the square pavilion attached to the great tower to another body of lodging of rectangular plan with a polygonal, truncated turret. It decorates the south façade, the entire east part of which was rebuilt in a relatively recent period.
