Originaire de Banyuls, le sculpteur Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) a réalisé des monuments aux morts dans quatre localités proches de son pays natal : Banyuls, Elne, Port-Vendres (voir notice PA00104186) et Céret. Le monument de cette ville est commandé en mai 1919 et inauguré en 1922. Sculptée en grès gris-clair, la statue de "La Douleur" représente un femme assise, un bras replié soutenant sa tête. Une version en bronze de la même statue a été installée dans les jardins du Carrousel à Paris en 1964. Le monument de Céret a souffert de dégradations.

History
Originally from Banyuls, the sculptor Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) created war memorials in four localities near his native region: Banyuls, Elne, Port-Vendres (see notice PA00104186) and Céret. The monument of this town was commissioned in May 1919 and inaugurated in 1922. Sculpted in light grey sandstone, the statue of "La Douleur" represents a seated woman, one arm folded supporting her head. A bronze version of the same statue was installed in the gardens of the Carrousel in Paris in 1964. The monument of Céret has suffered damage.
