A tower of the Guard is mentioned around 1308. After the revolt of the Angelets, in 1669, this position was considered important for control of the upper valley of the Tech. Dating from this period is the star surrounding the tower of the Guard. Vauban visited it in 1679 and proposed an important work. His project may not have been carried out, but the primitive fortifications of the keep were successively increased with works and roughly parallel envelopes. In 1686, construction of the comet-shaped work no. 5, of the bastion of Sainte-Marguerite and of the left and right cornices. The lower covered ways, begun in 1683, were only partly revetted in 1726. The construction of the upper covered way, entirely finished, extends from 1787 to 1793. An underground vaulted communication connects the fort to the town, with an intermediate crenellated redoubt. This redoubt as well as the upper communication would date from 1688. The lower part of the vaulted passage would date only from 1793. Access to the fort is by fairly steep ramps after crossing three successive enclosures leading to the comet-shaped work. A final gate leads to the starred keep whose branches are crowned with brick bartizans. The primitive tower occupies the centre of the keep.
