Historique

History
In 957, Seniofred, count of Conflent, made a donation to the monastery of Sainte-Marie de Ripoll of the "villa" of Evol. The castle itself appears in documents only from the 14th century onwards. Despite the donation of 957, it seems that Evol remained or returned to the domains of the counts of Conflent and Cerdagne. In 1314, Evol was erected into a viscountcy by Jacques 1er of Majorca. The castle is built on the summit of a hill which connects as a spur to higher reliefs to the north. The access ramp leads to the old south gate, of which only the eastern jamb remains. This gate opens onto a large inner courtyard bordered, to the south and east, by curtain walls; to the west by buildings; to the north by significant rubble from constructions formerly set against the north curtain wall. The whole forms, externally, a quadrilateral flanked by four round towers, completed to the west by a second enclosure surrounding a terrace. In the north-east corner of the courtyard opens, at ground level, a vaulted room, a sort of casemate five metres deep. The courtyard is bounded, to the west, by a wall parallel to the western curtain wall and pierced by five doors. Between this wall and the curtain had been arranged residential buildings, separated from one another by partition walls.
