Châteauneuf-de-Randon était l'une des huit baronnies de tour du Gévaudan. C'est à l'Habitarelle que mourut Bertrand Duguesclin en 1380, au cours du siège de Châteauneuf-de-Randon mené contre les Anglais qui y capitulèrent et y remirent les clefs de la ville sur le cercueil du connétable. History
Châteauneuf-de-Randon was one of the eight baronies of the Gévaudan. It was at the Habitarelle that Bertrand Duguesclin died in 1380, during the siege of Châteauneuf-de-Randon conducted against the English who capitulated there and handed over the keys of the city on the coffin of the Constable. In 1820, a location was sought for the erection of a commemorative monument. The laying of the first stone took place on 13 July of the same year. But the monument was not erected until 1828 on a project by Lanave. This first monument had a parallelepiped form and consisted of a base resting on three steps, a shaft and a capital. Built in limestone, the structure did not withstand time and a new project was raised on the ruins of the old one at the beginning of the 20th century. The first works began in 1913 and ended in 1927, based on drawings established by Lebas. Erected on a substantial platform, a sarcophagus rests on four strong pillars and forms an aedicule in the manner of a canopy under which lies the recumbent effigy. The base is engraved with three inscriptions recalling the historical facts and mentioning the details of the realisation of the monument. The structure was carved from granite.
