Face à la cathédrale, qui n'était encore que l'église du monastère Saint-Germain, s'élevèrent en 1368 les bâtiments du collège Saint-Ruf. Les bâtiments furent ruinés lors des troubles de 1560 et l'édifice fut rasé en 1612. Les matériaux servirent à l'édification de la citadelle. Les chanoines de Saint-Ruf revinrent s'installer à Montpellier en 1627 et travaillèrent jusqu'en 1645 à la réédification de leur couvent. Dès cette époque, l'immeuble se composait de deux corps de logis auxquels s'ajoutait une chapelle à l'est. En raison de la décadence de l'ordre, les bâtiments étaient devenus trop vastes et d'un entretien trop onéreux. Une partie fut louée en 1728 à l'Intendance. L'ordre fut supprimé en 1771 et ses biens dévolus au séminaire en 1777. Ces biens furent vendus à la Révolution, après avoir servi de prison. La division de l'édifice en deux hôtels intervint par la suite. Le vestige le plus visible des constructions de 1627-1645 est l'ancienne porte murée au n°1. Le grand escalier, rattaché au n°3, date probablement de la même époque. Les ferronneries de la rampe ne sont pas antérieures au 18e siècle.

Facing the cathedral, which was still only the church of the Saint-Germain monastery, the buildings of the Saint-Ruf college were erected in 1368. The buildings were ruined during the troubles of 1560 and the building was razed in 1612. The materials served for the building of the citadel.
