Historique

History
The castle presents a vast quadrangular enclosure. The outer wall of each of the four wings, and the four circular corner towers are one of the rare regional examples of a castle having retained this defensive and feudal aspect. Observation of the numerous repairs in the masonry, as well as later additions, allows four periods to be distinguished. The first extends until the 15th century. To this period would correspond the southern half of the great west wing, the construction of the enclosure with its curtain walls and machicolations and the four circular towers pierced by narrow arrow slits. From the 15th to the 17th century dates the greater part of the main structure. There was construction or reconstruction at the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. To be attributed to this period are the great staircase and the upper parts of the southern third of the west wing and the entirety of the south wing. From this period dates probably also the large room on the first floor with its mural paintings. One depicts a stag hunt brought to bay by the pack and the huntsman in a net; the other a face between two triglyphs. These paintings are a rare example of decorated interior in a seigneurial residence of the region. The third period corresponds to the middle of the 18th century with the construction of 2/3 of the north of the west wing; the east wing; primitive enclosure wall reduced in height as well as the towers; lowering by one storey of the primitive buildings; bringing openings up to date. The last period extends from the late 18th to the 19th century. The castle then develops numerous additions (wine cellar; fourth wing; closing of a vast external court...). The castle, practically uninhabited, then reduces to a substantial agricultural enterprise.
