Historique

History
The castellum is mentioned in 1036. The fief would have belonged, in the 9th century, to the abbey of Aniane. It passed to the viscounts of Béziers at the end of the 10th century. In 1114, the seigneury is in the hands of Guilhem de Montpellier. Saint-Martin-du-Cardonnet was part of a priory whose remains are found around the chapel. This served the surrounding area, dispersed settlement of isolated mas on the plateau. The construction appears to date from the 12th century. In the 16th century, the place suffered a Huguenot assault. The chapel stands within an enclosure occupied by the ruins of the priory. The rectangular plan is terminated by a semi-circular apse. The single nave is covered by a round arch barrel vault. Its three bays are separated by two relieving arches resting, by means of chamfered imposts, on thick projecting rectangular pilasters. A stone bench is set inside, at the base of the walls, all around the chapel. Raised one step but set back and lower, the choir is vaulted with a cul de four. It is separated from the nave by a round arch diaphragm arch with double roll. In the thickness of the west wall, a recess may have corresponded to a large walled door, with mitred lintel. The entrance portal is on the south. The bell-wall established on the western façade is later. It is pierced by two long pointed arch arcades.
