Historique

History
A very rare example in Languedoc of the construction of a terrace with boulevards and bastions, on which three block ranges are developed arranged in U-plan. This coherence was altered by 18th-century transformations which made the exteriors more commonplace, but left several sets of plasterwork. This architecture was built from 1572 to 1590 for the marshal of Joyeuse. From the 12th to the middle of the 16th century, the castle was composed of the central block without the ground-floor gallery, flanked to the west by vaulted volumes and the northern part backing onto the north-west tower on one side and, to the east, by the return of the present castle kitchen backing onto the out-of-wall staircase turret with, to the south, the turret called the dovecote. The building erected by Joyeuse is formed of three blocks in U-plan and a wall closing the fourth side of the courtyard, with a large gateway whose pilasters are decorated with vermiculated bossage. It comprised vast apartments with rooms in enfilade, coffered in the French manner, some with monumental sculpted fireplaces, as well as a grand ramped staircase and a secondary spiral staircase. Between 1658 and 1808, the castle was updated to the fashion of the day: a large part of the rectangular windows of the façades were reworked and modified into curved openings with depressed arches; some of the grand apartments were partitioned and decorated with plasterwork in rocaille style.
