Historique

History
By its low low-water flow, the Orbieu did not seem to justify work of this magnitude, but the sudden floods of this watercourse having destroyed several successive structures, it was decided to cross it at a sufficient height to eliminate all danger. The importance of the budget exceeding the means of the localities and the diocese of Narbonne, recourse was had to the States of Languedoc. A first project, established in 1745, located the bridge downstream, at Villedaigne, but made the planned road route from Narbonne to Lézignan longer. In March 1746 the project of engineer Carney was approved. The first works revealed that the rock was less solid than it appeared. The pier which was to receive the return of the two central arches was sinking. It had to be resolved to replace the two large arches planned with three arches. In 1752, Garipuy replaced Carney, deceased. The structure has five arches in round arch. The elevation of the top of the central arch is at 13m, that of the lateral arches at 6m, hence a fairly pronounced slope for the approaches. All the arches are in ashlar, as are the walls of the central part. Only the lateral walls, above the small arches, are in rubble stone. The two middle piers, in the watercourse, present triangular cutwater in ashlar. At the central arch, the keystones, both upstream and downstream, are decorated with a large sculptured cartouche bearing the arms of the States of Languedoc. The voussoirs of the three large arches are alternately long and short. An exterior band, in beading, runs at the base of the parapet.
