Abbaye fondée par un acte de 813, par le comte de Barcelone et son épouse. Les Bénédictins s'y établirent et firent des constructions considérables. History
Abbey founded by a deed of 813, by the Count of Barcelona and his wife. The Benedictines established themselves there and carried out considerable constructions. The church may previously have been a Roman temple which would have been adapted to its new purpose. The part which would correspond to this period was of Corinthian style while the rest of the building was Gothic. The abbey was raised to the status of bishopric by Pope John XXII in 1317 and then secularised by a bull of Pope Clement, dated 1531. From then on, the abbot's residence became that of the bishop and the ancient church of the monastery served as cathedral. In 1577, the Protestants destroyed the cathedral church after plundering the bishopric. The former refectory of the religious community then served as cathedral church.
