Historique
La commune comptait, au début du 19e siècle, 600 protestants pour 900 habitants. En 1843, les Protestants étaient encore obligés de prêcher au dehors ou sous des abris de fortune. Le projet de construction d'un temple est confié à l'architecte Chavonet. Les travaux ont lieu de 1853 à 1855. L'édifice est de plan tréflé, constitué d'un corps central carré d'où partent trois absides plus basses, à cinq pans, sous toitures indépendantes. L'arrière de l'édifice est plat, épaulé de deux contreforts au droit des absides latérales. Une petite construction rectangulaire servait de vestiaire. Inscrits dans les angles formés par les absides, deux porches carrés, percés d'arcatures en plein cintre, abritent les accès latéraux du temple. Les élévations sont percées de baies en plein cintre, encadrées de piles rondes à chapiteaux. History
At the beginning of the 19th century, the commune had 600 Protestants for 900 inhabitants. In 1843, Protestants were still obliged to preach outside or under makeshift shelters. The building is of trefoil plan, consisting of a square central body from which three lower five-sided apses depart, under independent roofs. Inserted in the angles formed by the apses, two square porches, pierced with round-arch arcading, shelter the lateral accesses of the temple. The original plan of the temple of Chauray distinguishes it from the numerous Protestant buildings constructed in the 19th century in the department.
