En 1170, à son retour de Compostelle, Guillaume l'Archevêque fit diverses fondations dont celle de l'église Saint-Jacques de Parthenay. En 1174, il fonda le prieuré de la Madeleine et y annexa la petite aumônerie avec l'hôpital destiné à procurer les soins et distribuer du pain aux nécessiteux. Le prieuré possédait un cloître, disparu, qui se situait le long du mur nord de l'église. Cette dernière subsiste. Son plan se compose d'une nef, d'un choeur voûté en berceau et d'un sanctuaire voûté en cul de four. Le pignon occidental a conservé son portail ainsi qu'une grande fenêtre ornée de colonnettes et de chapiteaux.

History
In 1170, upon his return from Compostela, Guillaume the Archbishop made various foundations including that of the church of Saint-Jacques of Parthenay. In 1174, he founded the priory of the Madeleine and annexed to it the small almshouse with the hospital intended to provide care and distribute bread to the needy. The priory possessed a cloister, now disappeared, which was situated along the north wall of the church. The latter survives. Its plan consists of a nave, a choir with barrel vault and a sanctuary with apse vault. The western gable has retained its portal as well as a large window decorated with small columns and capitals.
