The Ministère de la Culture's notice
Historique

History
In the 12th century, the castellany of Marval belonged to the viscounts of Limoges, then to those of Rochechouart. The castle was destroyed in 1569 by fire lit by Calvinist troops. What remained was the basement (room called the guards' room, the staircase as well as the Renaissance part to the east). It was largely rebuilt in the 17th century. The medieval part presents a characteristic set of vaulted cellars as well as the guards' room presenting a ceiling with painted and gilded coffers in the Louis XVI style. The staircase rises from this level and is surmounted by a French ceiling. At the rear, the 16th-century part opens through a door decorated with sculptured decoration. The 17th-century part is the largest of the castle. It is composed of a main dwelling block, flanked by two pavilions. The interior of this part preserves period decoration. The castle preserves its ancient moats.
