La construction répondait à une double préoccupation : conserver et mettre en valeur les collections réunies par Adrien Dubouché et réaliser un complexe pédagogique. La création de ces deux établissements est votée par le Parlement en 1881. Les travaux se déroulent de 1895 à 1900 sous la conduite d'Henri Mayeux. L'ensemble se compose d'un corps de bâtiment principal rectangulaire abritant le musée, avec deux ailes en retour encadrant un jardin. L'école à l'arrière est installée dans un bâtiment rectangulaire parallèle au précédent. La façade principale présente un décor en sgraffite composé de motifs végétaux ocre sur fond beige, et de plaques en porcelaine polychrome. Un avant-corps central couronné d'un fronton triangulaire accentue l'aspect monumental de cette façade qui devait également comporter les six bustes des personnages ayant illustré l'histoire régionale. Les ailes latérales sont agrémentées, côté jardin, par un décor en sgraffite de même style que le précédent. Les deux parterres de fleurs et d'arbustes composant le jardin d'honneur, ont conservé leur tracé d'origine. L'intérieur du musée présente un sol en mosaïque dû à Guibert Martin, des peintures dans le goût néo-pompéïen réalisées par Rouillard, des vitraux historiés réalisés par Delon sur des modèles de Gallan et Merson. Les sculptures du bâtiment furent exécutées par Honorat sur des modèles de Corbel. Dans la bibliothèque, panneau peint par Aridas.

History
The construction responded to a dual concern: to preserve and enhance the collections assembled by Adrien Dubouché and to create an educational complex. The establishment of these two institutions was voted by Parliament in 1881. Work took place from 1895 to 1900 under the direction of Henri Mayeux. The whole consists of a rectangular main building housing the museum, with two wings at right angles framing a garden. The interior of the museum features a mosaic floor by Guibert Martin, paintings in the neo-Pompeian taste executed by Rouillard, stained-glass windows with figurative scenes executed by Delon after models by Gallan and Merson.
