Historique
Remplaçant une première gare datant de 1856, l'actuelle gare des Bénédictins, conçue dès 1917, est construite de 1925 à 1929 pour la Compagnie du Paris-Orléans par Roger Gonthier, architecte de la compagnie, sous les ordres de l'ingénieur Julien. Etabli au-dessus des voies sur une plate-forme en béton armé, l'édifice se signale par son décor d'architecture et ses sculptures en façade évoquant les activités industrielles de la ville et signées par Henri Varenne. Dans le hall d'accueil, couvert d'un dôme de 31 mètres de haut, les verrières sont dues au maître-verrier Francis Chigot ; elles combinent des motifs géométriques et végétaux (des feuilles de châtaignier). La gare, qui comporte aussi un campanile de 61 mètres de haut, a été réhabilitée par la SNCF en 1979. Le dôme, victime d'un incendie en février 1998, a été restauré en 1998-2000.

History
Replacing an earlier station dating from 1856, the current Gare des Bénédictins, designed from 1917, is constructed from 1925 to 1929 for the Compagnie du Paris-Orléans by Roger Gonthier, architect of the company, under the orders of engineer Julien. Established above the tracks on a reinforced concrete platform, the building is distinguished by its architectural decoration and its façade sculptures evoking the industrial activities of the city and signed by Henri Varenne. In the entrance hall, covered by a dome 31 metres high, the glazing is due to master glazier Francis Chigot; they combine geometric and plant motifs (chestnut leaves). The station, which also includes a campanile 61 metres high, was rehabilitated by the SNCF in 1979. The dome, damaged by fire in February 1998, was restored in 1998-2000.
